It could be related to the sucker deal that Mer is offering that expires in 2005.
Guarantees 3 times QQQ rate (but only up to a point). In short anything above 40% goes to Merril.
Bagholder gets all the losses.

It is possible this wierd play has something to do with the Merrill screw job that is being offered. If qqq goes down you have all the risk but if it goies up mer caps the profits.
