Found an article in the news ticker at Germany c't magazine concerning Intel's flagship 1 GHz (don't try to read it unless you understand German):

heise.de

...

[author Andreas Stiller, translated from German by A.Pareis]

"limited quantities mentioned by intel obviously mean ZERO"

I found this phrase very funny.

"no test sample is available at Intel's Germany branch, same statements from great PC retailers"

"Not even in the labs they got one piece of the 1 Gig CPU" said Hewlett Packard B”blingen, same status from IBM

"one reason for the supply problems is the junction thermal (60 degC) thing, PC manufacturers are having problems with assembling the heat sink"

...

Dell says that there will be no systems available with this chip before the beginning of April. (They did not mention the year!!!)

Finally the article states that Intel's Gigahertz CPU appears to be a big PR show only with the main purpose to prevent AMD from gaining more and more market share by putting pressure on AMD's CPU prices.

In addition, can anybody please comment one the article I found at Mootley Fool:

"Quick Chat with AMD

I was able to sit down with Drew Prairie from AMD for a few minutes (as you can imagine, he was very, very busy and I was ecstatic about the time I did have with him). He gave me a roadmap that has been making its rounds about the internet, and I really didn't learn much new. Here is what I did learn though...

This quarter not only introduced the Gigahertz processor, it will also be AMD's first Giga-dollar quarter! That is the current estimate, and they are expecting a higher revenue than 1 Billion US. If you take a seat of the pants estimate of earnings, it will come out a little over $1.20 a share (twice that of last quarter's surprise earnings). Share prices are going to see a pretty hefty increase when AMD finally announces earnings."

IMO AMD is doing very very well this quarter. When I look at the adverts from the resellers here in Germany, I can't even find any PIII above 750 listed here, all you are able to order is the 667 MHz 133 bus model. On the other hand it is very well possible to order an 850 MHz Athlon from the same source! And, I do watch this for approx. 2 month now. ALL AMD models are available. Except the 900 and above, of course, which always take 1 month from the announcement to swap over here.

regards to all you AMD longs (long since $20)
