Tony - Re: "a great expression that Wilf Corrigan coined: "Fabless can become chipless."

That is indeed Wilf Corrigan's prayer.

Although LSI has indeed become nimble and successful in custom designed components, it was ALtera and Xilinx and others (nearly all fabless) that put a major CRIMP in LSI's original business - FOUNDRY SERVICES.

LSI was set up as a foundry for ASIC production - but the success of programmable logic (Altera, Xilinx, Lattice, etc.) ate up all the low end ASIC business, then the Medium end, then a LOT of the HIGH END.

For this reason, I don't like LSI - but as I said, they were smart enough to develop their own product lines.

Corrigan would just love to see Altera and Xilinx go "chipless" - but it ain't gonna happen. Both OWN sizeable investments in their strategic foundry partners and have superb, long-running business relationships with many other foundry partners - Seiko-Epson and UMC for Xilinx, TSMC and Sharp for Altera.
