An hour ago, I turned my laptop on and the opening screen came up and has the message: Configuring Windows updates. 100% complete. Do not turn off your computer. And the little spinning circle is there but no cursor. I can't get past it.

Is this normal for an update to take so long?

It's a Windows 7 update.

I thought there was something wrong with it yesterday because the response time was so slow, so I powered it off instead of putting it to sleep, like I usually do. There was a short notice when I hit shut down that one update was being installed. Then it powered off.
