More oil produced in the US, the more oil is free to power up China and Europe and elsewhere. The less the need for US hired gun and the defense of commercial routes.

Yes, that would be one take on the issue. However, if and when "push comes to shove" between the US and China, the US may try to block China's access to oil. This could happen after a confrontation between China and the Philippines or Japan or Taiwan. This would be a tactical option during a low-level war.

This only came to mind because of the Spiegel article.
