Republican leaders for eight years now have been leading the chant to privatize healthcare. And the people in the audience scream and cheer. Get rid of Obamacare they chant.

People were very foolish in my opinion going along with the Republican leadership to replace their public health benefits for private benefits. The whole point of that is to give more money to the private medical providers. That was it, yet the Republican rank-and-file never figured that out and just shot themselves in the foot, maybe the face

So let's look at what that means in reality. What are the pros and cons of private and public health insurance?

With private health insurance, you can never be quite sure what you got, it's almost impossible for any individual to quantify its actual value> I can't do it and I have some knowledge. And as often as not, the claims people, are instructed to not award any more benefits than they have to. And there are a zillion things a person could contract, that the private insurance might or might not cover.

So cost is not the only thing to consider, one also has to consider how much they can depend on that private health insurance actually covering you, if say for instance you contract some rare disease that requires a huge amount of money to save your life, or a medical procedure that is questionable.

But with public insurance like Medicare, that is seldom a problem. Those people are not instructed to try and prevent giving health insurance to people. Period. When people get sick or need some sort of medical care like a hip replacement, they just go and get it done usually with no problem at all.

One can have much more confidence in public health insurance than private health insurance.

I am old and the majority of my old friends have had some sort of major surgery like hip replacements and knee replacements and god only knows what else. Heart by pass surgery. Those of my friends that have Medicare are well taken care of, but those of my friends that don't have health insurance don't even go to the doctor. They simply cannot afford it. And the problems getting private insurers to pay for some stuff is common e.g. what if you are 80 and need a hip replacement?

Especially for certain medications.

I have state health retirement and Medicare. I pay four dollars for my prescription no matter how expensive it is and nothing for anything else. I never worry about my health insurance and that is how it should be.
