You asked: Why do you assume it would always have to be complex and tedious? Is it because installing applications on Windows as it is today is complex and tedious?

How much extra would you pay in an OS (slim or otherwise) for a simpler installation model and process? Or should better UI and infrastructure cost less?

Also, when you talk about the price of a slim OS, which price are you talking about? The price as sold to individual consumers or the price as sold to OEMs or corporate site-licenses? Do you (or does anyone else here) know what Microsoft charges hardware vendors per copy of Windows? In a similar light, does anyone here know the percentage of Windows licenses sold individually v.s. the ones sold to hardware manufacturers for inclusion with new equipment, v.s. the ones sold as site licenses to corporations?

Basically I am interested in finding out who the "average consumer" is in terms of price, usage and expectations, and using that in discussion here. I would guess that the individual who buys an operating system, application software and peripheral components separately, and then installs them personally, represents only a small portion of Microsoft's real consumer mix, and should not be used as the primary focus in discussions of cost or usage. But I am certainly willing to entertain real data or even opinions about the real mix.
