Kyoto Univ Runs Massive Supercomputer For Genome Studies

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Kyoto University has begun operating a massively parallel supercomputer for genome studies that is one of the largest computer systems ever introduced in Japan.

Delivered by SGI Japan Ltd., the system is built from three servers with a combined total of 800 microprocessors and a data storage system capable of storing 35 terabytes.

System components include a large-scale sever with 512 microprocessors for high-speed chemical computations, a server with 256 microprocessors for biology-related computations, and a graphics server with 32 microprocessors that can generate three-dimensional images based on the computational results of the other two servers.
