Mike,

Even though we got Billy C down in Chile pushing CDMA phones, Asia remains the big market for years to come. The issues surrounding Japan are too complicated for my public school education to figure out. Any turmoil, however, may not be good for any type of consumer oriented products, especially fairly high priced luxuries such as the high profit Q phone.

Japan is in denial. The Japanese government philosophically has not changed from the old Shogun days. Citizens exist for the purpose of serving the rulers and not vice versa. Due to the set of circumstances after WWII, the Japanese managed to escape the penalty for their monsterous deeds in Asia. The Japanese government even managed to hide the facts from their own people. Young Japanese believes Japan did nothing wrong and victimized by a couple of US bombs. As soon as Japan serves no major economic value, the Chinese (which includes Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia ....) and the Koreans will be collecting the long overdue debt. I feel sorry for the younger generation of Japanese who are stuck with paying the debt of their forefathers.

Maurice may want to analyze the political consequences but I am far more interested in how these changes will eventually affect the stock value of QCOM. I just hope the transition of leadership role in Asia is a slow one, a la soft landing.
