My mistake. What's done is this:
New client machine...
1) Install OS, applications, specific machine settings.
2) Back-up configuration to an image
Vast majority of user data is held on servers including user mail (using Exchange). If a machine becomes infected with something (rare), or if some kind of corruption has taken place (not so rare), the system is wiped, and the original image is restored.
Little time is wasted that way. However, it's easy to do it that way when little data is held on the client machine. When the majority, or all of the user's data is held on the machine, more careful backup strategies must be used. That's when incremental backups come into place, and very strict anti-virus policies are set in place.
It may seem extreme, but in the end, it saves a lot of trouble to be careful, and strict with policies.
