I didn't say, or mean to in any way imply, that what your Dad did was worthless to the country or the economy as a whole, only that showing benefit to one person, like your Dad, doesn't imply or even suggest that it generally benefits the whole economy.

As for the forced retirement, I'm generally against forcing retirement just because of age. If someone is productive beyond their cost to the company, and is so to a greater degree than their likely replacement, than it doesn't make sense to force them out just because they reach 60 or 65 or 72 or whatever. I believe such policies are now illegal in the US for most employment situations (the military and the police are exceptions, there may be others). But as much as I'm against mandatory retirement ages, I think I'm also against making it illegal for companies to have such ages. Generally I think companies should be able to hire or fire at will, and if they can fire, they should also be allowed to let someone go with retirement benefits. It might be foolish, it might be unfair, but IMO its probably their decision to make, not that of the US government.
