as i mentioned in a previous post SGI had better have some vision about what this advanced television stuff means. see sjmercury.com for a little story about what Microsoft, IBM and Compaq have in mind.
this is SGI's next big market, if they lead.
But in their arrogance, they ignore faithful customers and party with Clinton and studio management. SGI/AW's Maya is in beta without ever having listened to their base. and this is the key to their hold on entertainment. by the time it ships, competitors like MicrosoftImage and Kinetics will be into their next generation also. And SGI's decision not to improve the graphics of the Octaine over the last generation of machines (fear of canabalising Onyx sales) is a scary gamble that customers will be satisfied, and competitors will slow the pace of development.
With NSF cutting the number of supercomputer centers in half, where's that market going? SGI has been a sucess in selling the idea of visual computing, but who's going to make money?
