It is like Easter happening very close to the equinox and the "Easter" egg pre-dating the Christians. The fact that the early church organized itself around existing holidays is well known. This is extremely common in South America where the Andean villagers will frequently have "patron saints" (read: local pagan gods) that are imbued with the attributes of some off-the-shelf member of Catholic panoply of saints.
