The German economy is in trouble.
Exit zero

Apparently, it has been in trouble for a long time.

Long-term unemployed (12 months or more) as % of total unemployed, 2002

U.S.======9%
Britain===23%
Japan====31%
France====34%
Germany=48%
Italy=====59%

Some of the recent job loss comes from outsourcing, which may explain why Europeans are so enthusiastic about protectionism. Unfortunately, protectionism doesn’t seem to be working.

Mr Braun said industry-averse legislation, both at the EU and national level, continued to drive entire value chains away from Germany

Business leaders have been particularly critical of a German bill that sets some of the strictest limitations in Europe on the growing of genetically modified crops

American companies also outsource, and we don’t suffer from the same woes as Europe – for now. Pure, unfettered laissez-faire capitalism causes a lot of suffering, but socialist overregulation seems to cause a lot of suffering too. Europe needs to find some middle ground - for everyone's sake. As Robin Burke says at Winds of Change "Lest we indulge in schadenfreude, keep in mind that our economy is greatly linked to that of Europe and elsewhere around the world"

I guess, to paraphrase Winston Churchill, capitalism is the worst social system - except for all those others that have been tried.
