A good article. The Berkeley blood test measures particle size etc. I had one and most cardiologists get one for their patients eventually.

I had two EBTs with a 5 year interval. Both scores over 900 with a 2-3% growth in calcium score in each of the three arteries- Lad, LCx and RcA.

One reason stress tests and nuclear imaging don't show problems is because of the glagov effect where the artery remodels itself thereby retaining lumen (inside diameter size) although it does change shape to more egg shaped. Google glagov and you will find a lot of info.

So a lot of calcium can exist inside the artery wall. The small LDL particles penetrate thru the endothelium and end up in the intima and smooth muscle area between the inner and outer wall. The outer wall is moreflexible so enlargement usually pushes the outerwall out creating the egglike shape. Thus if the plaque/calcium remain inside the walls you can get high scores from EBT but basically be OK if you can prevent fracture, inflamation of the endothelium and crust of the plaque. This can cause false positives. There is a good article on EBT at About.com- heartdisease.about.com

As to reduction of plaque thru statins, I believe the article is basically correct. I have gradually increased dosage from 10 to 20 to 40 ZOCOR. Now my doc wants me to take 80. This is to get the LDL under 70 and tris under 100. But the article I think is correct on fish oil and vitamin D also. You put me on to Vit D. However there are studies out which show that Crestor can reduce and reverse the plazue build up. This article was lipitor. The same study with Crestor did show reduction.

This is my understanding of matters .
