LBighorn, A situation once happened to me in our company, when a stocky but muscular man strode into the office with a bandana around his neck, and some kind of a cap that I had not seen before. I asked him how I could help him, and he replied "I want to work". Didn't say he needed a job, but that he wanted to work. I later found out that he had been in the merchant marine on ship for 20 years. He was hired on the spot and proved to be a stellar employee.

If an employee is not informed of the goals, he doesn't know what to do, or how to do it. That is critical to success.

I agree with you on the pat on the back. There was one time that I designed a new sofa style, and showed it to me Step Dad, and he just looked at it and said "I'll think about it". I must have had a funny look on my face, because he said "what are you standing around for" and I said maybe a pat on the back would be in order. He replied "Why? That's what I pay you for." Kind stunned, I said "then pay me more" and damned if he didn't give me a raise.
