Movilnet to change TDMA technology
[ Here's what El Nacional actually said - DPR ]
individual.com

Venezuela, Apr 11, 2001 (El Nacional/SABI via
COMTEX) via NewsEdge Corporation - - Five
years ago in Venezuela, debate raged in the
telecoms sector over which technology to use in
the migration of services from analogical mobile
telephony to digital - Bell South subsidiary Telcel
chose CDMA (based on codes) whilst Cantv
subsidiary Movilnet opted for TDMA (based on
time) at a cost of US$250mil. Telcel had opted to
prioritise the future whilst Movilnet acknowledged it
was choosing the best technology available at and
for the moment. Now, Movilnet is to change so as
to offer third generation services and permit
company growth - it is analysing GSM (as used by
Infonet, Digitel and Digicel) and CDMA possibilities
without any need to rush a decision which is likely
to be taken this year all the same. Movilnet has an
estimated 1.8mil clients at present.
