Three million dead in Congo war: relief group
Last Updated Tue, 08 Apr 2003 13:35:52

NAIROBI - A relief organization says disease, malnutrition and war have killed more than three million people in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the past four and a half years.

The International Rescue Committee said in a report Tuesday that 3.3 million people have died during the country's civil war. It says at least 85 per cent of the deaths were from treatable diseases and malnutrition.

Humanitarian catastrophe

The New York-based group calls the situation a humanitarian catastrophe.

A United Nations official speaking on condition of anonymity said it's impossible to come up with an accurate number of deaths. But he said it's widely accepted that at least two million have died.

On the weekend, the UN reported that 966 people died in a massacre in northeastern Congo last Thursday.

It happened in the town of Drodro, near the Ugandan border, and in 14 surrounding villages in the province of Ituri.

The province has seen fighting involving rival tribes, Ugandan soldiers and rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo's civil war.
