On 1-time R&D write-offs. Very true. Look at BAY, CSCO, and COMS. They all have taken major charges over the past 2-3 years related to M&A and "in-process" r&d write-offs. CDN took a >$20mm charge last quarter for "reorganizing" its Japanese salesforce. What they actually did was 1)lay-off thier direct salesforce because they weren't being successful in Japan and hired Innotech as thier distributor.
Look for CDN's operating margin to expand today when they release EPS. (I bet S&M expenses fall as a % of sales).
