Small children don't have the same concept of ownership that adults do. Explaining why stealing is wrong and going with the child to return the item and apologize teach a much better lesson. And children who start fires either have emotional problems that professionals should be consulted for, or their parents didn't childproof the premises (depending on the age of the child). In any event, I don't think spanking is the solution. There are so many adults who were beaten, whipped, spanked--whatever--and are sure it didn't cause emotional damage. But how do you really know how you would have been improved if you had been treated lovingly, with firm and consistent guidance but not physical punishment? And how might that have affected your problem solving capabilities and your own parenting skills?
