Carter dares to speak what he considers the truth. And he is a very experienced and educated man when it comes to the Israeli-Laestinian question. The rightwing tends to see only one side of the argument, and that has resulted in the disasterous takeover by Hamas and the Hezbollah conflict in Israel. So whatever Bush is doing it's definitely not working.

All negotiators of any merit agree that peace in Israel depends upon Israel mamking concessions to the Palestinians. When you have 60% unemployment in Palestinian areas peace is next to impossible. It's a fine line you have to walk though.

Anyway, I'm sure Carter is at least mostly correct about this, but his statements were certainly going to piss off some hawkish Jews and evangelicals. However, that's justb the problem, these religious extremists. All of them on all sides. They don't want peace they want Armageddon and theya re the root of the problem.
