>>Apple would do well to cultivate a rogue Wintel box maker. <<
Not a bad idea! Apple could contract the whole operation in the same manner as Compaq does its sub 1k boxes. The Wintel upgrade market does not want to pay extra for Windows '95 anyway, as they have already acquired it. It doesn't even have to have Apple's name. Call it NexTel.
I understand that under Rhapsody, Windows and other OS's will run in these rainbow boxes. Why not install Rhapsody and support for user installed Windows with expansion options available? It makes sense.
On another note: If Steve'o does not bite the big AAPL offer, the size of the offer sets the company up to be able to buy a big name CEO. If not Steve'o, then the company will need a big name to carry the big plans forward. I agree with Phil that, due to the size of the offer, one can assume that earnings will be big. So positive in fact that perception may arise that Apple contributed to Wintel's domestic inventory overruns. If such is the case, this is going to be BIG!
However, I am always too much the optimist. With sector fire sales stealing oxygen from future volume, Wall Street is apt to anticipate Apple's 3rd quarter to be leaner along with the rest of the sector. Ergo, any speculative gains on the CEO announcement and stellar earnings will likely be dissipated all too quickly.
But, it will be fun while it lasts!
