Verizon Wireless Upgrades Network in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless has completed a series of network upgrades that are now delivering enhanced call quality and CDMA digital service to customers in San Diego County. The new network is helping Verizon Wireless better serve its San Diego customers, including local police, fire fighters and other public safety workers, who use wireless service to help protect San Diego residents.

Verizon Wireless' solid network of transmission sites provides wider geographic coverage in San Diego, enables more simultaneous calls on Verizon Wireless' enhanced CDMA digital network, improves signal delivery strength, and creates the capacity for future services such as next generation wireless data applications.

"Verizon Wireless ranked highest in overall customer satisfaction among wireless users in San Diego two years in a row according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2000 U.S. Wireless Customer Satisfaction Study," said Mike Finley, regional president for Verizon Wireless. "This year, we're actively pursuing a 'threepeat' victory by offering San Diegans enhanced call quality and network coverage."

The network enhancement is creating stronger coverage for customers who use their phone while traveling from San Diego to Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties. The upgrade also means that San Diego customers can receive voice mail notifications in the five-county, Greater Los Angeles area, and almost everywhere they travel throughout Verizon Wireless national footprint.

"We are excited about delivering the benefits of our network improvement to San Diego residents. A superior network enables our customers to use their wireless phones when and where they need to," added Finley. "It's not just a matter of convenience -- with the public safety role wireless phones now fill, solid coverage is important."

Over the past year, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $550 million in its Southern California network, expanding its digital coverage and increasing capacity for wireless voice and data services to meet the demand of customers in San Diego and beyond. Verizon Wireless also succeeded in placing new transmission sites in unobtrusive locations. The vast majority of new transmitters -- about nine out of every 10 -- were erected on existing structures such as office, apartment, and other large buildings, utility poles, radio towers and other commercial sites throughout San Diego.

"Our primary goal is to provide our customers with the coverage they need, while not creating clutter in our communities," said Finley. "We're proud that we have been able to accomplish that. And we're excited about the completion of our network upgrade and plans for continuing improvements. Our network team is aggressively monitoring usage so that Verizon Wireless can continue to meet the increasing wireless needs of San Diegans."
