Last Update: 5:01 PM ET June 3, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Altera said on late Tuesday it expects to post second-quarter sales at the high end of its targeted range.

The maker of programmable microchips, based in San Jose, Calif., said demand for its newest products continues to expand.

Shares (ALTR: news, chart, profile) ticked lower during late trading after closing the regular session up 1 percent at $18.55. Shares, which hit a one-year high on Monday, have added 56 percent since the quarter began in March.

During a scheduled update, Altera said its revenue should increase 3 to 4 percent sequentially for the quarter ending this month. Altera had previously targeted growth between 1 and 4 percent.

Altera's new range places revenue between $200.9 million and $203 million. During the same quarter last year, Altera posted sales of $178.9 million and earnings of 6 cents a share.

Analysts surveyed by Reuters Research had predicted revenue of $200.3 million and earnings of 9 cents a share.

The company does not provide estimates for its bottom line and it did not update its previous gross margin target of 67.5 percent.
