Customs News Release
Treasury toughens Cuban cigar ban
Tuesday, February 08, 2005
By Robert Szostek, USEUCOM Customs PAO
Mannheim, Germany - Cuba is one of several countries that the USA embargoes. This means that the Unites States not only bans Cuban cigars and rum from import, but also that U.S. citizens in third countries are now breaking U.S. law if they buy or use products of Cuban origin while abroad.

"The Treasury Department reports that many people try to smuggle Cuban cigars into the United States," said Michael L. Burkert, director of the USEUCOM Customs and Border Clearance Agency. However, he warned that penalties for attempted smuggling include confiscation of the items, civil fines of up to $65,000 per violation and possibly criminal prosecution resulting in fines of up to $250,000 and up to 10 years in prison.

Other countries do not ban Cuban products and they are therefore openly on sale all over Europe, Burkert continued. However, changes to the Cuban Assets Control Regulations now mean that U.S. citizens in third countries are also breaking U.S. law if they buy or use products of Cuban origin while overseas.

These bans even extend to cigars made in third countries using tobacco grown in Cuba.

Full details of the Cuban cigar regulations are available online at treas.gov.
