Bill, the "wire your own boards" expression My first mainframe was a CDC - the main control panel was a hardwired program that we all had to learn. What did it do? It was a driver for the card reader where we did the IPL (initial program load). What did it do? It was a kernal OS and the driver for the tape subsystem so we could load the remaining OS. A hard crash could take hours to days for recovery. Each new OS subsystem or compiler required that assembly language routines be programmed. My son used to think I made all that up until his AP CompSci teacher told him about the hard wired programming he had done. He was an old man of 55 :-) John
