Java Tools Developers Are Striking It Rich in Sellouts

Forget IPOs: The new way to get rich quick is to start a Java development tools company and wait for Microsoft or Sun to come calling.

Just dreaming - wouldn't it be nice for Sun to come calling.

Microsoft to offer terminal NC alternative infoworld.com
Microsoft this week will officially complete its 180-degree reversal on its position on network computers by releasing additional details on its own forthcoming Windows-based Terminals (WBTs).

Microsoft has changed tactics in its battle against NCs, deciding to offer a competing product rather than to exclusively promote the NetPC as its primary alternative, according to analysts.

"They want to get control of the NC rapidly before it gets away from them," said Dan Kusnetzky, an analyst at International Data Corp., in Framingham, Mass. "Things that are built to run with a browser or a Java machine can no longer be controlled [by Microsoft]."

"There are millions of legacy terminals to replace out there," said a representative from Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP. "To walk away from that market would be silly."

Now I think the MS cult followers will be believers. MS has reported that they are hiring more programmers this year. For what I don't know but my guess is MS will be stepping up the secret Office Java development now.
