TCD,

The relationship between transistor sizes and wire types has been somewhat blurred by Intel FUD.

Generally speaking, smaller transistors switch faster than larger transistors. Copper wire allows transitioning signals between gates to change more quickly. Copper improves performance on any size transistors, but becomes more of a necessity at 0.13u because the speed mismatch between 0.13u transistors and aluminum wires is too great.

Intel has claimed that they don't need Copper until 0.13u, but they are going to be hurting for not having it when Dresden comes on line next month.
