Millbrook High School students will have a chance to participate in the International Baccalaureate program in the fall.

The Millbrook Central School District got word on Jan. 20 that the high school would be authorized to become an International Baccalaureate World School this September, offering International Baccalaureate Diploma courses, the district said in a news release.

With the designation, the high school "will be part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people who will be ready to negotiate their futures successfully and make contributions resulting in a more harmonious and peaceful world," the district said. "The positive results of the International Baccalaureate Programme will become evident in our community as classes of the Diploma Programme students graduate and undertake activities that enhance social, cultural and economic environments locally, nationally and internationally."

The program is a "capstone" of the board of education and administrative goals to "enhance the educational opportunities for students," said Millbrook Superintendent Phil D'Angelo.

The application process took about "two years and involved two site visits and an intensive program review," the district said. "Administrators and teachers attended training sessions as part of the application process."

Millbrook is the second local district that will have an International Baccalaureate World School designation — the Red Hook district also has such a school, according to the news release.
