HI Eric: I used to ramble thru some of the old mine tailings near
Hancock which is on the Kewannauu in my early rockhound days. The penninsula main road has a marker indicating the snow levels in years
past. One of the markers recorded over 160" of snow one year. It is
beautiful country up there. I used to search the shores of Lake Superior for Agates and copper samples. I even have a sample with
visible copper stringers. I sure hope a nice discovery is made because
it may help some of the jobless people in that area find work. They
currently run a higher than normal unemployment rate. The Penninsula
is more tourist driven economy but is truly rich in copper history.
A lot of the old homes in Hancock were turn of the century, very old
but rich in copper heritage.
Sincerely
George

Also a caveat. Houghton and Hancock are sister towns, also the home
of Mich Tech. A great school with excellent mining research facilities.
