Jmac,

Just a thought, you write "Stcoks are not mammals--they don't need to rest. Stocks rest for reasons. They go down for reasons. I don't understand those reasons and that makes me nervous or "passionate." "

You see, stocks are bought by humans and humans are mammals. The market is a thing of human creation. That means it is prone to excess, to crowd psychology and many other things in addition to fundamentals and technical conditions.

If you reread your own post carefully and assess what you wrote about stocks not being mammals then I think you will see that you have the answer to your own questions. You are uncertain. Each person reaches their own level of uncertainty at some point and they take action. These tens and hundreds of thousands of individuals doing their own thing combine in ways to drive stock prices up and stock prices down; sometimes for unknown reasons.

To have a perfectly certain investment where you know exactly what you will get, may a suggest 0 Cupon Bonds. I can not vouch for the yield, but you have a guaranteed return.
