The problem is that an Athm officer was recently quoted as saying that the result of this decision would be that the roll out of cable access would come to a grinding halt. That is the problem. DSL advocates are hoping that this will be the case. I am hoping that since T was taking a gamble on their strategy that this case will be discounted and they will continue. If, however, many local govts start doing the same thing as Portland then all bets are off. At that point the buildout could slow until the open access issue is resolved. That is why it seems important for the FCC to act and act immediately to rescue T from the threat of being sued by a substantial amount of local govts. Only the lawyers will benefit if this is the outcome, the consumer will suffer by not having access to cable modem service. I have written to Mr. Kennard of the FCC by a e-mail address obtained from this thread. As a sidelight, the article from Kramer's outfit addresses many of the comments that I have made, apparently at least two people think alike on this matter. And as for Ahaaaaa, I understand your point, but your view on the effectiveness of advertising is not at issue, good money is paid for these ads, its repetitive advertising that is the watchword of advertisers and that is the reason they are annoying but also the reason they are done, and paid mightily for. $35 billion in television ads revenues at least annually. This is real money and what the battle is all about.
