Analog Devices Enables Mass Deployment of Super-Fast ADSL/G.lite Modems

NORWOOD, Mass., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Analog Devices (NYSE: ADI), today announced the company's newest DMT-based, full-rate and G.lite ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line) chip set solution. The new AD20msp930 ADSL chip set helps to extend Analog Devices' leadership positioning in supplying standards-compliant ADSL chip sets to the world's leading communications equipment makers.

The AD20msp930 enables up to 10 Mbps of Internet data throughput per subscriber line, which is more than 100 times faster than 56-kbps analog modems. The industry standards-based interoperable chip set is designed for both central office (CO) Internet access equipment and customer premise equipment (CPE).

ADI's new chip set addresses the need for affordable, dependable high-speed Internet access in residential, SOHO, and enterprise markets. The AD20msp930 offers original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) a smaller, more efficient DSL chip set solution that consumes less power in less space than previous designs. The new solution reduces overall system and operational costs for corporations, Internet Service Providers (ISP) and telecommunications service providers. These cost savings translate into end user benefits, including improved quality of service levels and more affordable high-speed Internet access.

The AD20msp930 G.Lite/full-rate ADSL chip set is a fully-integrated end-to-end solution that integrates all of the digital functions onto one chip, including the digital signal processor (DSP), the coprocessor and the digital interface to the customer's backbone Internet connection via an ATM interface. The chip set also includes a new high-performance analog front end (AFE), and ADI's de facto industry standard low-power line driver. This enables significant power consumption savings of more than 1 W of power in both CPE and CO equipment.

"ADI's AD20msp930 builds on more than six years of experience in the design, development and production of the most widely adopted and deployed ADSL silicon solutions in the industry," said Russ Johnsen, Vice President and General Manager of Analog Devices' Communications Division. "ADI drew upon its analog and digital signal processing expertise to combine all the control functions in a seamless design, with no need for external processing components. The reduction in power and space enables equipment manufacturers to double the density of their existing solutions."

The AD20msp930-based modem can achieve downstream speeds in excess of 10 Mbps per subscriber line. Typical configurations will result in downstream data rates to 6.1 Mbps and a 224 kbps duplex channel over carrier serving area loops, and upstream data rates of 450 kbps. In addition, the AD20msp930 is code-compatible and upgradable, retaining OEM investment in code and hardware development with previous ADI ADSL solutions, including the popular AD20msp910 and AD20msp918 chip sets.

The AD20msp930 ATM layer 1 to line driver xDSL solution combines the company's AD6449 (digital data pump), AD6440 (codec) and AD8016 (line driver) in a two-chip plus line driver design, significantly reducing ADSL equipment and service deployment costs. For PC applications, the chip set can be powered directly from the Universal Serial Bus (USB), eliminating the need for a separate chip set power supply, thereby reducing size and lowering costs.

Industry Standards Compliant for Full Rate & G.lite Connectivity The AD20msp930 chip set is compliant with a variety of industry standards including American National Standards Institute (ANSI) T1.413 Issue 1 and 2, European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) TR328, and International Telecommunications Union (ITU) G.992.1 (G.dmt) and G.992.2 (splitterless G.lite).

ATM Interface

The AD20msp930 offers a standard UTOPIA 2 ATM port in addition to a synchronous serial interface for other protocols such as HDLC (high level data link controller), frame relay, or IP (Internet Protocol) for CO applications. This allows increased flexibility for systems vendors to provide diverse data types, resulting in an overall reduction in cost of ownership for service providers. In addition, ADI provides the industry's only, proven ATM Layer to communication line ADSL solution, thus providing customers with significant procurement cost savings.

ADSL over ISDN

The AD20msp930 has a flexible bin assignment enabling software configurable upstream or downstream tones. This allows support for ADSL over ISDN, an important European telecommunications capability to enable data and voice communications while building on European investment in ISDN technology. The ADI solution employs the ETSI TM6 & ITU G.992.1 for the U.S. and Annex B for Europe ISDN standards.

Fast-Retrain

ADSL technology is always on (connected) for both quick and easy Internet and voice access at the same time, during the same session. However, due to the multi-tasking nature of ADSL, a "retrain" needs to occur when a user wants to use the telephone line for voice communication, while maintaining the DSL Internet connection. ADI has implemented a less-than-one-second Fast-Retrain, which will enable users to seamlessly use the same twisted pair for simultaneous voice and data communications without losing the connection or experiencing a delay in achieving a dial tone. In addition, the AD20msp930 features a rate-adaptive design that automatically adjusts to line characteristics and delivers the best possible performance, regardless of indigenous line conditions resulting in improved Qualitity of Service (QoS).
