John,

What the 60 Minutes report on the arsenic poisoned wells did not say is that the arsenic only showed up in the water after the water level had been drawn down sufficiently for the oxygen to react with the arsenic compounds, with the new compounds being released this way. This is truly a tragedy and one cannot blame the international organizations for the work they did to drill wells and educating the Bangladesh people from drinking surface water. In my view this tragedy is one for which we should be very slow in assigning blame. Of course, the international organizations did not listen to the early alarms voiced by the local doctor.

The world population increases at the rate of 77 million a year, and the pressure this puts on the environment will lead to other disasters of increasing frequency. There are 6 Billion of us here and we were less than 2 Billion at the start of this century !!!!

With my best,
