Looks like, to me, that TDMA's life will be shortened in some instances - merely because Edge will use up more & more available spectrum. (I believe you call this "being a victim of it's own success).
As Greg points out, the GSM "protocol" will live on, as it eventually migrates to a CDMA Radio Frequency Interface.
The "protocol bit" , I believe means Infrastructure (equipment) that is built to comply with certain GSM rules or standards. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Ip (processing of voice and data in packets) is just an infant. Would not expect it to become redundant, anymore that I would expect CDMA versions to quickly fade away.
