Redback Networks Chosen as Hot
Startup by Telecommunications Magazine

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999--Redback
Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq:RBAK), announced today that Telecommunications
Magazine, a leading monthly publication covering telecom technology,
its market, and related business trends and developments, chose
Redback Networks as one of its Hot Startups of 1999.
Telecommunications Magazine editors made their decision based on
interviews with contenders and input from industry analysts. The
magazine notes, "The familiar litany of gripes about DSL hasn't abated
much over the last few years, but the Redback Networks solution has
been seen by analysts and customers alike as a major milestone on the
road to DSL profitability."
Explaining Redback's qualifications, Telecommunications Magazine
writes: "The secret of Redback's success is that it does many things
well: things that usually keep network managers up at night. Redback
offers ILECs, CLECs and ISPs a way to scale their xDSL network with
traffic aggregation, interoperability, management and provisioning of
large numbers of users."

"We are honored that Telecommunications Magazine has recognized
that Redback developed a unique, successful solution that enables
rapid, mass deployment of broadband. Our goal has always been to
provide best-of-class products that address and anticipate the needs
of our customers and the broadband market," said Larry Blair, vice
president of marketing at Redback.
About the SMS 1000 and SMS 500
Redback's SMS 1000 and SMS 500 are a powerful type of intelligent
networking device deployed by carriers at Network Access Points
(NAPs), cable Multiple Systems Operators (MSOs) at head-ends, or
service providers at major POPs. The systems accept a high
concentration of data traffic from multiple DSL Access Multiplexers
(DSLAMs), Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTSs), or wireless
devices. Aggregating thousands of subscribers, the systems perform all
of the translations necessary to convert the traffic to IP, relieving
service provider backbone routers of heavy-duty frame translation that
can limit the scalability of high-volume networks.

About Redback Networks, Inc.
Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., Redback
Networks, Inc., is a leading provider of advanced networking solutions
that enable carriers, cable multiple system operators (MSOs), and
service providers to rapidly deploy high-speed broadband access to the
Internet and corporate networks. The company's Subscriber Management
System (SMS) connects and manages large numbers of subscribers using
any of the major high-speed access technologies such as Digital
Subscriber Line (DSL), cable, and wireless. The SMS 1000, the first
product in the SMS family, received Best of Show honors for WAN and
remote access equipment at Network + Interop, Las Vegas, in May 1998.
