As a musician, I feel I should point out that the community is quite divided on this issue. Many artists and producers are frightened by the digital music revolution (hereafter referred to as 'DMR'), but many also are welcoming it with open arms.

I am not sure personally what I believe the future holds, but the greater risk is certainly to the top heavy industry as opposed to the musician. The musician *is* after all the product itself. And we only need the help of a good engineer and producer to MAKE our product. All the many layers of corporate activity down (up?) the chain are not needed for the art to exist.

Now before someone flames me saying thusly: "Yes but you need the corporate structure to promote the product, and sell it."... keep listening.

Many musicians see the 'DMR' as simply a redirection of revenue streams. Since the musician gets such a tiny percentage of music sales in the current model many of us feel that it is quite possible that we could benefit from a restructuring of the industry. Some artists notably Prince, and Todd Rundgren, have already begun to redirect the money flow more directly to themselves via the DMR.

Another interesting argument. Many would agree that the overall music product of our time has been kinda blah. Compare the music of our century to the music of Bach... Whew... As a matter of fact many of the real musical achievements of the last 50 years have happened to some degree apart for any sort of marketing blitz... And today we are supposed to be groovin to the sounds of 'Livin la Vida Loca'... Hmm..

Anyway... Just my $2.50
