The project has the approval of the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry. The system is expected to be available for commercialisation in 2002-2003. Many international telecoms groups have agreed to support the Chinese TD-SCDMA technical standard proposal, which was submitted to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in June 1998.
