Newbridge Networks Launches Digital Media Distribution Service, the Industry's First Solution to Enable Broadcast Media Distribution Over Service Provider Networks
ATLANTA, GEORGIA--Comprehensive Solution Enables Carriers To Become Full Service Providers By Offering Broadcast Video, Audio and Data with Internet and Traditional Voice Services
SUPERCOMM'99, June 7, 1999 - Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN - news; TSE: NNC - news), a world leader in multiservice, multi-access wide area networking solutions, today unveiled the Company's Digital Media Distribution Service (DMDS) solution, part of the Newbridge(r) Versatile IP portfolio of advanced Internet protocol (IP) solutions. The highly scalable and reliable Newbridge DMDS solution enables established and new generation carriers to offer broadcast media services over digital subscriber line (xDSL) infrastructures.
DMDS leverages the strengths of standard IP multicast protocols to offer a broad range of new revenue generating services -- including premium quality broadcast television, video-on-demand (VoD), radio, and Internet services -- with guaranteed quality of service (QoS) and end-to-end network and service management. DMDS is the industry's only carrier class offering and, when combined with high speed Internet access and voice services from Newbridge, delivers a comprehensive solution that enables carriers to become full service providers.
''At NBTel, we have thoroughly evaluated several competitive network solutions for delivering residential broadcast media services via ADSL. The Newbridge Digital Media Distribution Service is the only architecture we found that delivers carrier class service for IP TV over copper,'' said Ken Clancy, program director, IP TV Services, NBTel. ''We expect DMDS to provide the necessary quality, scalability and end-to-end management to cost effectively deploy large-scale TV services to a demanding residential customer base.
''The innovative Newbridge solution moves the IP forwarding and policy capabilities away from a centralized router network and efficiently distributes them to the edge of the copper network. This functionality is essential to achieve our cost objectives for the delivery of residential broadband services, including TV services, over IP. By seamlessly integrating IP multicast forwarding and policy functions with our ATM switching network, we see a great reduction in total network costs,'' added Clancy.
''The Newbridge DMDS offering is the only comprehensive solution that enables incumbent and alternate carriers to offer a full range of services, including broadcast video, audio and data with Internet and traditional voice services,'' said Christin Flynn, analyst, the Yankee Group, the Boston-based research and consulting firm. ''Newbridge leverages its Versatile IP technology and top-notch ATM switching to provide IP multicast while guaranteeing full quality of service to each subscriber.''
DMDS - Leveraging the Newbridge Solutions Portfolio
''The Newbridge DMDS solution capitalizes on the proven strengths of leading products and solutions from across the Newbridge portfolio,'' said Jim Arseneault, executive vice president, Internetworking Products Group, Newbridge Networks. ''The Newbridge switching and access platforms, along with the Versatile IP architecture and full network and service management, provide the foundation necessary to deliver high performance IP multicasting.''
Using the industry leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch and the Newbridge 350 Integrated Versatile Services Node (IVSN), the DMDS solution gives service providers the connection-oriented switching fabric and QoS guarantees necessary to deliver fully managed unicast and multicast transport capabilities directly from their existing broadband network infrastructures.
''Newbridge has delivered an innovative media distribution solution that leverages the inherent strength of IP multicast in an efficient, highly scalable manner,'' said Martin Hall, chief technology officer, Stardust Forums and co-founder of the IP Multicast Initiative. ''The Newbridge DMDS solution enables service providers to realize the potential of ADSL to offer a complete portfolio of broadcast voice, video and data services.''
The Newbridge asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching platforms used to support DMDS can also simultaneously support other Newbridge Versatile IP solutions, such as Carrier Switched Routing and Multiservices Remote Access (M-RAS). The Newbridge Versatile IP solutions enable service providers to seamlessly blend the best attributes of private enterprise networks, the Internet and their own shared public network to offer the optimal mix of control, reliability, reach and cost options.
The Newbridge DMDS solution also provides customer access to broadcast media and traditional voice services through the standards-compliant Newbridge asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) solution. The Newbridge ADSL solution integrates high density DSL line cards into the MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch or the Newbridge 350 IVSN to deliver ADSL services seamlessly, with full QoS guarantees, directly from the existing service provider ATM infrastructure.
The newly introduced Newbridge 350 IVSN greatly expands the economic reach of broadband services through a flexible mix of access technologies, very high port densities, footprint and power reduction and outside plant capabilities.
End-to-end network and service management and provisioning are provided by the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager, enabling service providers to focus on deploying new services while reducing the associated administrative burdens and costs. The Newbridge center-weighted service management model consolidates policy administration to a handful of policy servers in the network and distributes the intelligence to enforce these policies to the network edge.
The Newbridge DMDS solution is being demonstrated at Supercomm'99 in Atlanta, Georgia, June 7-10, 1999. The Newbridge booth is #7715, located in Hall H.
