Clinton Is Seeking Drug Coverage for Medicare, USA Today Says

Bloomberg News
June 7, 1999, 7:17 a.m. ET

Washington, June 7 (Bloomberg) -- President Bill Clinton
will propose offering prescription drug coverage to the nation's
39 million Medicare beneficiaries financed with a ''modest''
premium, USA Today reported, citing White House chief of staff
John Podesta. The drug benefit would be ''universal and
affordable,'' offering a coverage ''better than anything you
could buy today in the open market,'' Podesta said on CBS's Face
the Nation yesterday, the newspaper reported. The Medicare plan
would be financed with a federal subsidy and a premium charged to
recipients that would be significantly below the $90-a-month
premium charged by private insurers, USA Today said, citing
unnamed White House officials.

A congressional advisory commission on Medicare recommended
eliminating fees charged to health maintenance organizations to
pay for informing elderly patients about their health-care
choices.
