OneMain.com Hires Mike Read as President and Chief Operating Officer
Former British Telecom and America Online Senior Executive To Manage
Day-to-Day Operations of OneMain
VIENNA, VA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999-- OneMain.com (Nasdaq:ONEM- news) today announced that Michael D. Read, former senior executive at British Telecom and America Online, is joining the company as President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Read will be responsible for all day-to-day operations, including marketing, technology, telecommunications and engineering. He will report to Stephen E. Smith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of OneMain and will begin at OneMain on June 16, 1999.
OneMain is a leading U.S. Internet service provider focused on providing high levels of customer service to individuals and businesses located predominantly outside large metropolitan areas.
Mr. Read, 51, has had a long career of increasingly significant management positions at some of the world's largest telecommunications companies. He spent nearly 30 years at British Telecom, rising to the position chief of global engineering. In this position, Mr. Read was responsible for more than 2,000 people around the world, leading British Telecom Group in networks and systems strategy and plans across the company and its alliances. At British Telecom, he also served as Senior Vice President, Network Services in Concert, which included worldwide planning and operations for Concert Communications, the global alliance between British Telecom and MCI, as well as all product design, development and testing for the alliance. At the time, Concert was the world's most comprehensive multiservice network carrying voice and data on an intelligent platform and carried the services of over 2,000 large multinational customers.
Upon leaving British Telecom, Mr. Read was a senior executive at ANS Communications, an America Online company, with responsibilities for sales and marketing, product management, plus business and service development. During his tenure at ANS, revenues doubled yearly and the company expanded its offerings of basic Internet Service Provider products to include: Sure Remote (a dial service), security (firewall and encryption), attachment (dedicated lines to the Internet), virtual data networks based on IP technology including Intranets, Extranets and a Web Hosting product.
Mr. Read joins OneMain from PACER International, where he served as Chief Executive Officer. PACER is a global organization involved in assisting new and incumbent telecommunications companies in every area, from network design and deployment, to site design and construction as well as central office design and implementation. PACER supports local carriers, long-distance carriers, Internet Service Providers and equipment suppliers. At PACER, Mr. Read was responsible for day-to-day management of all activities, including sales, marketing, human resources, finance and legal.
