NASDAQ this morning. The stock has risen $7 13/16, or 5.8% to $148 1/8 - off of
its earlier all-time high of $148 13/16. The firm's trading volume of 1.0
million is well-above its average daily volume of 194. Block trading is at
modest levels with just 21% of total volume stemming from trades greater than
10,000 shares. A review of the reported trade data revealed that Montgomery
Securities is the largest reporting broker with 300,000 shares. Montgomery is
known for its influence among the technology stocks and typically trades on
behalf of more aggressive and momentum-type institutional investors. However,
given the light block-trading volume, it is unclear if the institutional brokers
are merely making a market or trading on behalf of their institutional clients.
Gains associated with day trading, whether done be on behalf of professional
market makers or retail day traders, are typically more susceptible to
volatility than gains supported by strong institutional volume.
