Recent fighting has focused on the southern province of Upper Nile, where one government-backed militia group has battled with another for control of oilfields that all sides and factions in the civil war hope to exploit. James Wani Igga, the secretary-general of the SPLA's political wing, said that rebels were not interested in destroying the oilfields but simply pushing government forces out of the region. ''We will need those wells when the war is over to restore our economy,'' he told a delegation of three U.S. congressmen who visited Yei and another rebel-held area at the weekend.
