Hmmm. Much as a ballerina, you don't survive in the spy biz without lots and lots of hubris.

Also be mindful that nine times out of ten, it has been the boneheaded stupidities of idiocy and excess that show up as exposes in the papers. Often because they are so egregious that someone decides to leak them, while little is ever said about the successful activities, the sacrifices of some of our own people. These tend to remain under the clandestine cloak.

I have recently been reading a book about the history of Berlin (Faust's Metropolis) and was utterly shocked at the extent of Soviet duplicity, savagery and cruelty in Eastern Europe following the Second World War, even though I had some general idea that they could never have been considered a benign force. To my mind, it justified a lot of things that happened under the aegis of our intelligence services that I might not have even thought about before.
