The RDBMS is used as substrate by lots of enterprise applications
vendors. That's the sense in which Oracle is a "platform vendor".
It is a problem for Oracle that they compete with some of their
biggest customers. LE acknowledged some of this problem at the
meeting last week, and said that Oracle consulting would stop
competing with the big 5 consulting firms, since these firms
recommend database products. If Oracle wants to be in the apps
business this seems inevitable, but I've heard people claim that they
currently lose more in apps vendors pushing competing databases than
they make in selling their own applications. I have no idea if this
is true, or if true, how long it will remain the case.
