News on VOCL from Globes 4587 of 4588 Bezeq International to Operate Internet Telephony Service from July 1999
By Efi Landau
Bezeq International today announced a new service it will launch commercially on July 15 for international telephone calls from personal computers, while surfing the Internet. Bezeq International is the first company in the world to offer this service to its customers.
The service is offered to surfers who use the company's Internet service Internet-Bezeq International, via the PC. Users will pay for Internet minutes usage, will receive a 25% discount on international calls, and will pay a monthly fee of NIS 5.9 for the service, including VAT.
Bezeq International claims the service, named "Telephonet", for the first time offers a practical solution for Internet surfers with only one telephone line at home. The company claims that, to date, everyone who had only one telephone line for both calls and surfing the Internet, could not do both at the same time.
Bezeq International President and CEO Ori Yogev said this was the first of a series of communications services via computers connected to telephones the company will offer customers. Yogev said the service was unique in that it was equally available to everyone, for both regular and business use.
The software product that enables the service to be offered was developed by VocalTec. Bezeq International said the call is transmitted over the Internet at the local end, and then transfers to regular international communication lines, and all the accounting procedures between the operators in different countries apply. This is in contrast to calls transmitted entirely on the public Internet domain where the sound quality is lower.
