The way that AMZN marches into more and more new
business (seemingly) without regard to its overall
profitability, it displays a certain arrogance: the
leaders of AMZN feel that they are the best team to
execute virtually any (and preferably EVERY) good
Internet startup idea.

However, history has shown that companies that lose
focus are pursuing a policy of sacrificing long term
success for short term gain. When a company spreads
its resources paper thin, its markets are often invaded
at several points simultaneously. It's nice that AMZN
has apparently managed to borrow a lot of cash, but if
shareholders don't cooperate and keep the stock price
hyperinflated, I wonder if the banks may want to call
that note. The whole thing could topple like a deck
of cards.

It might be a good idea, from a long-term business perspective,
for the company to retreat from some of its ambitions, and
consolidate a little (i.e. make a profit) before taking on
another dozen Internet products. The company appears to have
made its mark in the mind of the consumer in the area of books
(and bookstore-like products). It's a shame to dilute that
brand image. As ancient wisdom would have it, "the man who
chases two rabbits catches none." At these share prices, if
AMZN catches none, a lot of AMZN long's will be VERY unhappy.
