Alec, for a cyclical company (like AMD) the name of the game is determining where in the cycle the company (its earnings) is and timing your buy/sell. Milage varies depending on how good your timing is.

In general, I use the following strategy:

I follow 40-60 companies I'd like to own and I monitor their P/E. If it goes below a chosen threshold I immediatly re-check into the company. If there are no bad news, or if I determine they only affect the short term, I call the company to re-affirm the no-bad-news finding. If it checks OK, I buy. Together with the P/E threshold I have a short story about the company and why I want to own it. The story provides guidance for when it is time to sell. I preffer not to sell unless there is a good reason.

now, don't worry about CS :-)
