Actually, I knew there was something wrong with that. Here it is...

We are talking equity here. Assume that your equity is 10k. The most you would be able to make on that "equity" is 100%. However, I agree with your extra 35%, should you decide to short more. Hope I have that part right. So therfore, I will venture to say that the most you can get on your "equity" by shorting is indeed 135%. But like you said, that's kind of like digging the hole deeper. Your return on cash would of course be 285%, but not on your equity. I'd also like to point out that to reverse that trade, you would only need to tie up 1/2 of your cash and you could receive a substantially higher return.
