Lucent lands $300 mln in fiber optic contracts
MURRAY HILL, N.J., June 7 (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) on Monday said it landed contracts worth more than $300 million from Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. (Nasdaq:MFNX - news) and PF.Net, and introduced new undersea fiber optic network products.
Under a contract worth more than $100 million, Lucent said Metromedia Fiber Network will use Lucent's fiber cable as it expands its communications networks to additional markets in the United States and Europe. The network, currently planned for more than a million fiber miles in North America and Europe, will cover more than a dozen cities.
Under a separate $200 million contract with privately held PF.Net, Lucent will supply fiber cables for a coast-to-coast, 15,000-mile fiber optic network under construction.
Lucent reiterated that it is experiencing double-digit growth in its optical fiber business and plans to expand its facility in Atlanta, as well as other manufacturing sites in Denmark and China.
Lucent also introduced a new undersea fiber, called TrueWave Submarine RS, that allows network providers to increase the capacity and transmission speed of trans-oceanic networks. The company also introduced a new ribbon fiber cable, called AccuRibbon DuctSaver+ Cable, that doubles the capacity of fiber packaged in Lucent's ribbon cable design. |
